In the face of climate catastrophe do citizens have any power? When the extinction of the human species is threatened, where is our agency?

Activists putting their life and freedom at risk to protest against governments’ failure to take effective action are making their mark. Today’s polls describe 58% of people want their government to set ambitious targets at COP – up from 43% in 2015. But that’s not fast enough. What will it take to better leverage the power of 7.9 billion people?

Over the past five years, The Alternative UK has been documenting the signs of a new socio-ecomomic-political system emerging across the planet. Key to its success will be the tools and mechanisms for people to come together across political divides and get access to the solutions already available.

In this session Indra Adnan, author of The Politics of Waking Up: Power and Possibility in the Fractal Age, will invite key players in this emergent system to share what is already happening.

  • Aneira Roose McClew: from Extinction Rebellion to Trust the People. People building relationship, trust and community wealth are the foundation of a viable future
  • Stacco Troncoso, co-founder DisCO.coop. Reimagining work, values and distributed economics for socio-ecological restoration
  • Becky Burchill:Director of the Change Festival: the power of Arts to generate the soft power – attraction and narrative – needed to engage everyone
  • Shelly Alcorn, COO of Ubiquity UniversityIn the face of climate catastrophe do citizens have any power? When the extinction of the human species is threatened, where is our agency?

Convener:

  • Jim Garrison, President, Ubiquity University
