This session explores positive actions for reversing the degradation of the oceans, going from ridge to reef. What is personal is now political. Protecting the apex species of the ocean and coastal areas saves the socio-economics of the entire world. Interconnections abound between the marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Conservation action is urgently required to save life at sea.

Participants:

  • Convener: Eduard Muller, Founder and CEO, University of International Cooperation, Director, Regenerate Costa Rica
  • Carolina Ramirez is a conservation activist in Costa Rica and Latin America. Director of the Costa Rican National Campaign United for Sharks Leader in Bill 21754, that aims to protect vulnerable or endangered sharks under this same law.
  • Randall Arauz is an environmentalist working in Costa Rica. He was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2010 for his efforts on the protection of the sharks and banning of the shark finning industry. Arauz was awarded The Gothenburg Award for Sustainable Development for 2010, shared with Ken Sherman. He has represented Costa Rica as a scientific consultant to the United Nations and to wildlife conventions such as the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS). He currently works as the marine conservation policy adviser for the Colorado-based non-profit Fins Attached Marine Research and as the development adviser for the Costa Rican non-profit the Endangered Marine Species Rescue Centre (CREMA is its Spanish acronym).
