In our third session in the European healthcare second series ‘Challenging the model’ convened by Lars Münter of the Nordic Health 2030 Movement and David Somekh with the Europe Health Futures Forum, we bring together a group of health specialists to discuss the following proposition: It often seems that digital health is proposed as the single most important solution for improving European health and healthcare now and in the foreseeable future. Of course, there are other exciting developments like genomics, the use of big data, and so forth, but we ask: what are the realities, potential drawbacks as well as tremendous opportunities this phase of health and healthcare technical innovation represents?
Can healthtech help deal with the manpower crisis currently threatening the sustainability of European healthcare?
Will it assist with the shift from an illness -treatment focus in health to more investment and action for prevention and education?
Might the present hype about digital benefit the commercial actors disproportionately, rather than yield genuine, cost-effective improvements for citizens?
Given that the dramatic increase in longevity in western populations over recent years seems to be stalling, might digital enhancement of humans be the remedy to promote even greater longevity?
