A few scientifically proven benefits that meditation also gives: stress/trauma reduction, improved performance in sports and elsewhere, increased mental and physical health.
When I was teaching at Stockholm University in 1984, I gave a special program for the Swedish Prison Wardens and Priests on Using Meditation for Rehabilitation ~ It Changes People Inside so When They Go Outside, They’re Different. ˆThey’re recidivism rate is about 20%, ours 80%. They now use more rehabilitation practices.

Nouwen compiled by Wendy Wilson Greer 1999. In the Foreword Sue Mosteller shares, "Henri leads us to glimpse the reality of our approaching death, not as something fearful and traumatic, but more as a return to the womb of God'. Communion with God grows deep inside us and we gradually learn a trust so tangible that we begin to image our death as a 'letting go' of the swing on the flying trapeze.... 'The worst thing a (trapeze) flyer can do is to try to catch the catcher.' 'Dying is trusting the catcher,' says Henri. 'Don't try to grab Him; He will grab you. Just stretch out your arms and hands and trust, trust, trust'."

The second time, the door opens and you can look inside. The third time, you can step across that threshold and enter the poem."
My Ignatian retreat was like that, having the time and leisure to visit in depth one or two scripture passages each day. I would relate my experiences about "entering the passage" to my director who then would assign me new passages for the next day.
