I’m on board with the idea of uplifting the people who lived on our land. I also struggle with in the Americas, we apparently had people who sacrificed other people. I’m not sure how to reconcile that behavior with my feeling that indigenous people had deep knowledge, and lived in synchrony with the land. For example, many Native American tribes lived that way. OTOH, many were militant against each other as well. This is a separate point from above about human sacrifice, but is the same in terms of being violent, against one’s fellow humans.

To Amy Blumenshine: yes I know they were sacrificing the children to the gods. I guess in the big picture you can look at war that way, but the intention of the people doing it is not the same. War is often about territory, and resources. The land. And you are considered an adult to go to fight. Out and out murder of a six year-old is a bit different. I know those people lived closer to death—it was more a feature of their lives. Parents might lose 2 or 3 of their kids to disease—maybe they thought the gods took them. But—I relate more to the culture of the east, such as India, the Vedas and all that. And in fact our culture comes from there—the Roman culture grew from that. We call it the Indo-European culture, without thinking about it much, but that’s really where it comes from I think of the culture of the Americas as an anomaly.
