Judy, in my understanding there were books/gospels eliminated from the canon and as such the references to reincarnation were effectively edited out, but not formally by the Council at that time, but earlier. The Gospel of Mary Magdalene and the Gospel of Thomas are two examples, and I would refer you to Elaine Bagels’ treatment of the Gnostic Gospels.
