Today we will hear from Otto Scharmar, author of Presence and Theory U and co-founder of the U Process. Otto will use the U Process and Presencing methodologies to provide a context for understanding fear, hate and exclusion in contrast to curiosity, compassion and courage. Shelly Alcorn, a close observer of politics and culture in America, will provide an update on what is taking place as the election unfolds.
The US election on Nov 3 is one of the most consequential in history. Democracy itself is under threat, especially in in the United States and by no person more than President Donald Trump. Since he took office in 2017, Trump has presided over the most corrupt Administration in American history, perverted the major institutions of government, especially the Justice Department, and has been mounting increasingly effective attacks on the electoral process itself in order to ensure his continuation in power. Whether or not he will succeed will largely be determined by what happens this week as the people vote and the votes are counted or not.
As the longest continuous democracy in history, the fall of democracy in America would have consequences far in excess to any consequences we face with the COVID pandemic. The pandemic will eventually pass but if Donald Trump succeeds in ending any semblance of meaningful democracy in the United States, the reverberations globally would be severe and long lasting. Authoritarianism would surely triumph. With the powers of surveillance inherent in social media and the internet, government and corporate power would be unchecked and tyranny could shape global politics for years to come.
Each day from November 2 - 6, we will follow what is happening and bring in commentators who can help us understand the significance of the events.
