I’m very interested in this discussion not only as an ecologist but also when at the American Museum of Natural History for 25 years I was part of international programs in this area with the Nature Conservancy (on global prairie/plains ecosystems) and the World Wildlife Fund (on sustaining migratory species) Also we have major permaculture people in our UN SDG Thought Leaders Circle (www.sdgthoughtleaderscircle.org).

Re Richard Page’s request. The fundamental work on mainstream science’s turn to the “cooperative view” of evolutionary process (see below re Drs E.O. Wilson and D.S. Wilson) and understanding 3 kinds of natural selection nature (only the first of which, the old Darwinian competition model does not naturall move toward altruism. The next two — group and multi-level natural selection supersede the Darwinian model, as complexity increases, and move toward altruism in nature. BUT THIS SCIENCE IS VERY NEW and often people don’t know about it. Other important part of the equation...We need deep cuts to methane. Methane has 86Xthe warming power of Co2 over a 20 year period. So we need to address the impact of Methane from the energy sector and the impact farming/agriculture has on rising Methane levels. Reduction of Methane is the quickest way of affecting change.

He and Dr. E. O Wilson then redefined Sociobiology in this context in a series in 2016 in the Quarterly Review of Biology. After hearing Rupert Read, I humbly propose a plan to unite the peace movement and the climate movement. The main reason is that militarism and war will inevitably “derail” all the good efforts of the climate movement.
Also, a peace movement can create “trust and respect” among nations and people to ultimately create a path to reallocate major portions of military spending to climate, Covid, and humanitarian needs.

Yes the do! There is a great book by Fred Provenza about this and the work of Alder Springs Ranch in Idaho—it focuses on nutrition, how they know how to eat what they need. But similar concept. The herding is needed to get the animal impact (hooves chipping capped soil, dung urine) that mimics the predator.

One issue I see is the very skewed distribution of land access, especially in the areas of highest food consumption, i.e. Europe, UK, USA. Farming has become a despised occupation in the "developed" world. Small, family, and community farms, a diverse and ecologically-appropriate agriculture can have a huge impact on many aspects of this multi-headed crisis we're in.
How do we improve access to land, especially in the richest countries?

One of the reasons Costa Rica leads with the biodiversity movement is thanks to former President Figures whom outlawed a standing army. As a result, Costa Rica uses war machine $$ instead for regenerative agriculture, renewable energy, education and medical care. The Peace University in Costa Rica is also helping educate future for a future of a loving earth.
