This is a fairly good explanation and the above books and movie fill in the blanks. Lee liked Kennedy and did warn the FBI in Chicago 2 weeks before when there was going to be a possible attempt in Chicago. Lee had known Ruby since he was a boy. They were close.
Ruby felt he was given the same shot they were going to have Lee take to Mexico, give to a Dr to take to Cuba to inject Cuba who would give him lung cancer and die in 28 days. That was aborted at the last minute and they sent him to Dallas. He and Judyth were going to go to Mexico, divorce their spouses and get married and live there.
