Humming was a signal our mother was angry when I was a child and to stay away. Then I realized as an adult that it was a way she calmed herself. She is allowed to be angry sometimes and she used it as a coping mechanism.

As a African American, I know that the culture is very much grounded in sound. As a child, I was always curious about how preachers could bring people to the point of shouting. In my research later, I discovered that it was when the preacher engaged in various rhythmic sounds & reached a certain frequency, people would say they “feel the spirit” & would shout. Also, common within the culture is the saying “I feel you”, meaning I feel your vibrations, emotions, & intentions.
