Our program series The Democracy Dialogues on Humanity Rising in 2022 brought together an outstanding group of leading authors, experts, innovators and activists dedicated to advancing the goal of saving and protecting our democracy in the November midterms. George Cappannelli with John Steiner and Margo King are pleased to announce the expansion of the series in 2023 to include the subject of governance here in the US and around the world.

We believe this it is vitally important that we not only capitalize on the good momentum gained in the midterms but also recognize, as should be clear to all of us from the insanity that is passing as governance in the US House of Representatives and the continuing efforts of Donald Trump and those who support him in those red states across the country to undercut US democracy, that we are not yet out of the woods and that there is much that still needs to be done to revisit and strengthen our democracy here in the US and in other countries as well.

To this end, throughout 2023 we will bring you people on the front lines who were there in 2018, 2020 and 2022 and will be there again in answering the core question this series will address – What’s Next In The Battle To Save Democracy and What Can Each of Us Do To Contribute.

George Cappannelli is a Gold Nautilus award-winning author, an Emmy and Telly Award winning film and television director and an award-winning sculptor. He is also a leading voice on social, organization and individual change who has served as consultant and coach to a number of leading organizations and agencies in both the private and public sector as well as in the pollical sector where he served as a campaign manager in a California US Senate race, an Arizona Mayoral Campaign, and worked behind the scenes as a strategist and consultant in 3 Presidential Campaigns. George is the co-Founder of AgeNation, Empower New Mexico, former Executive Director of The Sedona Institute, The International Integrity Foundation and a Director of The Society for the Advancement of Human Spirit. He is the co-author of 5 books and has written 7 other works of non-fiction and fiction.

Panelists:

Eleanor LeCain is a speaker, author and advisor to policymakers. She builds on decades of experience in government and political campaigns to show practical pathways toward a better America and a new world. She is planning a Solutions Summit in 2023 to bring innovators together with decisionmakers to speed implementation of key solutions to our most pressing challenges. In 2022 when election deniers threatened to take over elections, Eleanor helped elect Secretaries of State committed to election integrity: all 11 election deniers running for Secretary of State were defeated. Eleanor served in Massachusetts as Assistant Secretary of State, and Executive Director of Blueprint 2000, leading strategic planning for the state government. Her first book, Breakthrough Solutions: How to Improve Your Life and Change the World by Building on What Works, has a Foreword by the Dalai Lama. Her second book, The Mayors Guide to Accelerating Gender Equality, came from her bringing together mayors with women leaders to create an action agenda to improve conditions for women and girls.
Bradley Onishi is a former white Christian nationalist who just published a book, Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism – and What Comes Next. He is a scholar of religion and cohost of the Straight White American Jesus podcast. His writing has been published in the New York Times, LA Review of Books, and Religion & Politics, among other outlets. He holds degrees from Azusa Pacific University, Oxford University, and L’institut catholique de Paris, and he received his PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara. A TEDx speaker and the author, editor, or translator of four previous books, Onishi teaches at the University of San Francisco and lives in the Bay Area with his wife and daughter.
Katie Usalis is RepresentWomen's Partnerships Director, focusing on developing and overseeing program strategies that activate and equip changemakers to advance structural solutions to the representation crisis in U.S. politics. She holds a Master’s degree in International Development from the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (Barcelona Institute of International Studies). Katie worked in Myanmar for several years where her passion for social justice and human rights led her to serve as a Program Manager and regional Inclusion Advisor for partnerships across Myanmar and Cambodia. She brings unique experience working in diverse contexts and across language barriers to develop program strategies specifically aimed at removing cultural and institutional barriers to equity. Naturally inclined to systems thinking, she is skilled at turning big visions into tangible strategies, building impactful relationships, and is passionate about the value diversity brings to our work. She strongly believes that fair political representation is a structural catalyst to better policies and a more sustainably just society.
Jena Marie Griswold is Colorado’s 39th Secretary of State and Chair of the national Democratic Association of Secretaries of State. She was first elected in 2018 as the youngest elected Secretary of State in the United States. She was reelected to the office in 2022. Secretary Griswold grew up in a working-class family in rural Colorado and was the first person in her family to attend a four-year college and then law school. She knows first-hand how important it is for every vote to count and for every Coloradan's voice to be heard, no matter their background. Since taking office, Secretary Griswold has overseen seven statewide elections, protected Coloradans Constitutional right to vote and supported the State’s business community by cutting red tape and the cost of starting a business. Secretary Griswold holds a B.A. in Politics and Spanish Literature from Whitman College and a J.D from University of Pennsylvania Law School.
