We don’t become an elder with a Medicare birthday. It’s a stage, not an age. And it’s not another role to wear like a change of clothes. Rather, it’s an internal shift in awareness that arises as a result of inner work, a letting go of the ego’s agenda and its identification with image and success. It’s a shift from heroic empire-building to a release of egocentricity, strategizing, pushing, and controlling the agenda. For some of us, it’s a shift from role to soul, a release of identification with what we do and a deeper identification with our spiritual nature, who we really are.

Who are our Elders today? What are their contributions in this time of interconnected crises? How can Elders join with youth to make intergenerational impact?

Moderator:

  • Dr. Connie Zweig, author of The Inner Work of Age, extends her work on the Shadow into midlife and beyond. Connie Zweig, Ph.D., is a retired therapist and coauthor of Meeting the Shadow and Romancing the Shadow and author of Meeting the Shadow of Spirituality and a novel, A Moth to the Flame: The Life of Sufi Poet Rumi. Her new bestselling book, The Inner Work of Age: Shifting from Role to Soul, extends her work on the Shadow into midlife and beyond and explores aging as a spiritual practice. It won the 2022 Gold Nautilus award, the 2021 American Book Fest Award, and the 2021 Best Indie Book Award for best inspirational non-fiction. Connie has been doing contemplative practices for more than 50 years. She is a wife, stepmother, and grandmother. After all these roles, she’s practicing the shift from role to soul.

Presenters:

  • Chip Conley: What is a modern elder? When Chip Conley joined tech start-up Airbnb at age 52, after a successful career as a boutique hotel company founder, he was twice the age of most employees, which earned him the title "Modern Elder." As mentor to young Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, Chip saw the value of intergenerational collaboration in a company that is now the most valuable hospitality company in the world. He served as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for four years. He is author of Peak and his bestselling book, "Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder," became the inspiration for the midlife wisdom school, Modern Elder Academy, launched in 2018. It now has 2,000 alums.
  • Chief Phil Lane: What is an indigenous Elder? Hereditary Chief Phil Lane Jr. is a member of the Ihanktonwan Dakota and Chickasaw Nations and an internationally recognized leader in human, community, and economic development. During the past 54 years, Chief Lane worked with Indigenous Peoples from the Americas, Micronesia, Southeast Asia, China, India, Hawaii, and Africa. He served as Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. The FWII's initiatives include promotion of Deep Social Networks and the Digital Fourth Way, Environmental Protection and Restoration, the Compassion Games International, and Reuniting the Condor, Quetzal, and Eagle via the Fourth Way, which creates community-based, culturally respectful programming for individual, community, and economic development that transcend assimilation, resignation, and conflict.
