In the U.S., 10,000 Baby Boomers turn 65 each day. During the third quarter of 2020, nearly 30 million Boomers left their jobs. But, for the first time in history, many people will live 8,000 days after retirement.
This unnamed, uncertain time after the end of paid work can trigger a late-life identity crisis. Who am I if I’m not a CEO, teacher, therapist, lawyer, nurse? For many of us, retirement brings the loss of a role that structured our days, gave us meaning and community. So, we naturally feel disoriented, disconnected, and afraid of becoming invisible and irrelevant. For others, retirement brings a yearning for something more, a deeper identity, a different contribution, or second purpose—a new beginning.
Connie will focus on retirement from the inside out, our unconscious fears and fantasies, unlived hopes and dreams for this time of life. Marc and Richard will focus on programs that tap the experience of people past midlife as a resource to solve social problems and, in return, provide purpose and meaning to this stage of life.
