Today we explore Religious Trauma Syndrome with the woman who coined the term based on her own experience. This is a condition resulting from harmful experiences while living within a fundamentalist environment and the stressful experience of leaving the fold of a fundamentalist religion.

In our culture, we assume religion is either good for you or benign (whatever helps you sleep at night).  But fundamentalist religions teach certain toxic beliefs and engage in toxic practices that can cause psychological harm, sometimes for a lifetime.  Two assumptions are particularly harmful:  “You are not ok,” and “You are not safe.”  Today’s speaker, Dr. Marlene Winell describes Religious Trauma Syndrome, a condition resulting from two things: harmful experiences while living within a fundamentalist environment, and the stressful experience of leaving the fold of a fundamentalist religion.  Leaving a religion of one’s childhood can be revolutionary as one moves from one entire worldview to another, potentially creating symptoms that are cognitive, emotional, social, or cultural in nature.

Dr. Winell’s own experience of leaving the fold and her clinical experience as a psychologist has primarily been in the area of fundamentalist Christianity, but she has worked with clients of many faiths.  She emphasizes the need to become “Reclaimers” and reclaim one’s own life and heal from indoctrination.

  • Marlene Winell, Ph.D., is a psychologist and educator who specializes in recovery from fundamentalist religion.  She has experienced in her own life the transition from being a devout religionist to being a “reclaimer,” a person who has left religion and reclaimed her life.  She has been working in the area of religious trauma for over thirty years and coined the term, Religious Trauma Syndrome.  Dr. Winell is the author of Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving Religion.  She is now the director of Journey Free: Recovery from Harmful Religion, an agency providing online support for individuals, groups, and professionals.  The support group is called Release and Reclaim, and the professional training for religious recovery consulting is in the Helping Professionals Group.
