These changes are the causes and the effects of the rise to domination of the materialistic worldview that has led to the disenchantment of the world. Iain McGilchrist has addressed how each of our brain hemispheres supports our attending to the world in unique and different ways in his book, The Matter With Things: Our Brains, Our Delusions, and the Unmaking of the World. He concludes that we have come to be so disconnected because we have come to be in such a detached left hemisphere dominant mode of consciousness that is unable to appreciate our interconnection and interdependence with the living earth. It is unable to engage a participatory consciousness.
