Hiawatha First Nation is located on the north shore of Rice Lake east of the Otonabee River. It is found in Otonabee Township approximately 30 kilometres south of Peterborough. The First Nation consists of approximately 2145 acres of land of which 1523 are under certificates of possession.

Dekanawida was a half legendary native american man who changed the history of native tribes in America. He founded the Great Iroquois Confederacy. He tried to put an end to war and wanted peace for everyone no matter what tribe. He also helped change the way the constitution was written though he lived hundreds of years before it was even written. They didn't want to change their ways and so they refused him. One day The Great Peacemaker came across a woman who often fed warriors. She offered food to him and he accepted. During the meal, Dekanawida shared his great message of peace. She accepted it fully and stopped feeding the warriors. She changed her name to Figonhsasee meaning "New Face". She was the first convert to his new way of life.

Although we can not see the distant shores of where we are going, we all listen to the water to feel the tides direction beneath us. Together as we dive with our paddles into the depth of our collectiveness to feel our struggles, we bow our canoe with every stroke to humbly ask for a safe journey.
As we lift our cedar sisters from the water we can hear the call of mothers sacred places from every direction.
It is our strength of heart that beats the drum forward with the harmony of our collective embrace and will insure our coming home.
While our canoe may feel empty from each stroke into the depth of ourselves, it is the compassion of kindness that will lift each other from the ocean of spirits to reach our calling of oneness together.
The joy of paddling home vibrates the songs of water that splash all around us and energizes the magic canoe forever towards to a place called home

Clean blankets were placed on top of tainted ones, so they could be handled and seal in the virus from cleansing sunlight.
