Miorcea Eliade in his book, Rites and Symbols of Initiation, begins with the statement that, “It has often been said that one of the characteristics of the modern world is the disappearance of any meaningful rites of initiation.” He goes on to say that “Modern man… wishes to live in a basically desacralized cosmos.” Initiation, Eliade contends, is what, for the men of traditional societies, created their knowledge and image of themselves. It produces “a basic change in existential condition, the novice emerges from his ordeal endowed with a totally different being from that which he possessed before his initiation; he has become another.” I am dubious that us moderns are ready for such an initiation.
