Humans are individual and social beings. Body and soul is traditional language for this duality. I relate brain (mind) to body (our embodied individuality) and consciousness to soul (our collective sociality / relatedness to one another) which is invisible, nonphysical, spiritual.
In my culture which stresses individuality and less so sociality, I see a tendency to collapse "consciousness" or "soul" into our individuality, even to an extent of reducing all to the brain or to the popular metaphor of "heart." Whereas considering consciousness as our connectiveness with others opens me to an anthropology that recognizes humans are both individual and social beings.
