There's a study mentioned in Job Kabat-Zinn's book Full Catastrophe Living, in which 2 sets of patients in a nursing home are 1) encouraged to make decisions on their own; 2) encouraged to rely on staff. They are also given a plant to care for. Group 1 is told that they are responsible for the plant; Group 2 is told not to worry about it (others will water it).
