They had no “rights,” only privileges — to do only what their charter stipulated. If a corporation exceeded their charter, the corporation was dissolved when its charter was revoked by either the legislature or the courts. Charters were deemed as democratic tools. Corporate constitutional rights were/are merely efforts to usurp the power and authority of democratic authority by our state elected representatives to define corporate actions, to hold them fundamentally accountable.
