I urge us to re-examine the patriarchal impact of the foundation story of Abraham’s nearly killing his son, as the story goes, in response to God’s command. This brutality is held up as desirable obedience to God and clearly has led to great harm. The story also notes how Abraham had already sent off his first son to likely death because the boy’s mother wasn’t Hebrew. The message is that even your own father will kill you in obedience to a higher authority. Scary.
