The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity’s Search for Meaning

Jeremy Lent

2017 Prometheus Books 569 pp ISBN 10: 1633882934 ISBN 13: 9781633882935

EPUB, 2.79 MB: ::https://book4you.org/book/2947570/e6bc90::

This fresh perspective on crucial questions of history identifies the root metaphors that cultures have used to construct meaning in their world. It offers a glimpse into the minds of a vast range of different peoples: early hunter-gatherers and farmers, ancient Egyptians, traditional Chinese sages, the founders of Christianity, trail-blazers of the Scientific Revolution, and those who constructed our modern consumer society.

Taking the reader on an archaeological exploration of the mind, the author, an entrepreneur and sustainability leader, uses recent findings in cognitive science and systems theory to reveal the hidden layers of values that form today's cultural norms.

Uprooting the tired clichés of the science-religion debate, he shows how medieval Christian rationalism acted as an incubator for scientific thought, which in turn shaped our modern vision of the conquest of nature. The author probes our current crisis of unsustainability and argues that it is not an inevitable result of human nature, but is culturally driven: a product of particular mental patterns that could conceivably be reshaped.

By shining a light on our possible futures, the book foresees a coming struggle between two contrasting views of humanity: one driving to a technological endgame of artificially enhanced humans, the other enabling a sustainable future arising from our intrinsic connectedness with each other and the natural world. This struggle, it concludes, is one in which each of us will play a role through the meaning we choose to forge from the lives we lead.

Jim mentioned a book, Talking to Fairies (?) , that references Pan. Perhaps this book: Talking to Fairies by Sheila Jeffries. Introduces different types of fairies, conveys real life experiences of people who believe they have been helped by fairy folk and discusses stories about fairies in folklore and tradition. Suggested level: primary, intermediate. 1998

Re. dualism Leo offered quotes of John Macmurray, 1936 The Structure of Religious Experience (His philosophy helps correct Cartesian dialism):

"We belong to the order of Nature, but if that were the whole truth, we should not be human beings. Our humanity consists in the fact that we KNOW that we are part of the order of Nature, and live in that knowledge. In this we transcend the natural order while remaining immanent in it. The spiritual world to which, by our transcendence of the natural order, we belong is not another world, but the natural world known and intended."

"The dualism which arises from the reference of religious ideas away from the empirical experience of common life expresses itself in a multitude of forms with which we are, unhappily, only too familiar. It appears as the disjunction between secular and sacred, between human and divine, between the natural and the supernatural, between body and soul; or, with a somewhat different intonation, between reason and emotion, between matter and mind, between individualism and socialism."

"A dissociation which has its roots in the religious field must spread through every part of individual and social life and lead slowly but surely to complete disintegration. What God has joined man puts asunder at his peril. But to trace its ramifications would carry us too far afield. Instead, I shall leave the analysis at the point the argument has reached, and present, in as simple a form as I can compass, the view of religion to which it points."

patriarchy / oligarchy used men as cannon fodder and industrial gears

prefer Eisler's "Dominator culture"

Pater - pattern / mater - matter We are both matter and pattern

Human "doings" trying to become human beings

Dialectic, linguistic tricks to keep us (M/F, skin color, human/nature) separate and divided

hope, integrity, ... commitment, openness, receptivity

Not ready to let men off the hook. Need more male dialogues, commitments and acknowledgement of our harm to women and other species

To contribute our essential part

Yes, ruthless realism. COP was a failure in light of our huMAN crimes against what is right and necessary

Look in the mirror and ask what are we doing: not a mythical time in the future but today and everyday

I'll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass

the world is too full to talk about.”
