Participatory Workshop on the Solidarity Economy: Building "Another World"
Speaker: Emily Kawano
01:17:18 jack: Looking for hope in these troubling times? Join us to explore the solidarity economy, a movement to build an economy and world that centers the welfare of people and the planet over private profits and blind growth. This historic moment of multiple convergent crises has also opened up opportunities to build "another world" beyond the destructive impulses of capitalism. The solidarity economy is a growing global movement with a huge foundation of concrete, actually existing practices such as co-ops, mutual aid, community land trusts, social currencies, etc. that are aligned with solidarity economy values of solidarity, democracy, equity in all dimensions, sustainability and pluralism (not a one-size-fits-all approach).
01:19:46 jack: This participatory workshop will explore the definition of the solidarity economy, the state of the movement, and look at a wide range of concrete examples.
The Social Solidarity Economy proposes a system that is not only economic, but also socio-political and cultural, basing life-sustaining processes at the center of socio-economic activity, placing people, communities and the environment above the capital and its accumulation, and rejecting relations of inequality and exclusion based on gender, sexual orientation, and identity, age or origin through values related, among others, to cooperation, reciprocity, self-management, and solidarity.
01:20:42 jack: Emily Kawano is a visionary economist, social justice advocate, and leader in the solidarity economy movement. She is the co-founder and co-coordinator of the U.S. Solidarity Economy Network (USSEN) and has played a pivotal role in advancing economic systems rooted in cooperation, equity, and sustainability. For nearly a decade, she served on the board of RIPESS (the Intercontinental Network for the Social Solidarity Economy), contributing to global efforts that promote economic democracy and alternative economic models.
As the co-director of Wellspring Cooperative in Springfield, MA, Emily works to develop a thriving solidarity economy ecosystem, fostering worker cooperatives, community wealth-building initiatives, and local economic resilience. Her leadership has been instrumental in creating equitable, people-centered economic structures that challenge traditional capitalist frameworks and empower marginalized communities.
01:21:28 Patricia Aguirre: Dear all..have to go...time here is different...and being called!
01:21:51 jack: Emily holds a Ph.D. in economics from UMass Amherst, where she was affiliated with the Center for Popular Economics and served as its director for nine years. She has taught economics at Smith College and worked as the National Economic Justice Representative for the American Friends Service Committee, advocating for policies that address systemic inequality.
Her international experience includes founding a popular economics program in Northern Ireland in collaboration with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, where she played an active role in the Northern Ireland Social Economy Network. Throughout her career, Emily has remained committed to transforming economic systems, ensuring that social justice, sustainability, and collective well-being remain at the heart of economic development.
01:22:44 jack: RIPESS has member networks on 5 continents and Oceana. Its North American member is the US Solidarity Economy Network. Other members include:
Urgenci – Community Supported Agriculture around the world
GSEF – Global Social Economy Forum
INAISE – International Association of Investors in the Social Econ
For more information about the Social Solidarity Economy Global Network of Networks check out RIPESS.ORG and also the US Solidarity Economy Network, USSEN.ORG, which is a member of RIPESS.
I have long thought that anyone who believes that conscious business practices are vital to manifesting a world that works for all would find their time and energy well spent to dive deep into the activities and practices of the global network of networks of the Social Solidarity Economy.

01:24:58 Anne: Question, the wirilng dervishes are getting themselves in surrender mode by the movement they initiate? They don’t need another person?
01:28:39 Rick Botelho: I had an image orgasm. Take a look, voyeurs. ::https://www.perplexity.ai/page/how-might-we-break-the-taboo-o-dupRzUSvQ1CNmVUNV_aNrQ::
