The Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Orcival is located in the village of Orcival, on the Sioulet which flows through one of the valleys of the Monts Dore. It was built at the beginning of the 12th century and completed in 1166, replacing an older chapel built on the site where she was discovered. This new cathedral was built on a new site to accommodate the Black Madonna: Our Lady of Orcival and of course the many pilgrims who come to venerate her. She is a favorite of Gypsy devotees.
This basilica is located on one of the secondary routes of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.The statue of Notre-Dame-d'Orcival, seventy-five centimeters high, was carved from walnut wood. Its facings are silver and silver gilt. It is dated from the end of the 12th century (ca 1170). She is always referred to as a Black Madonna, although she is described as having been "brownish" and has been repainted to a more fair complexion in 1960.
She is also known as Our Lady of Irons because many prisoners who prayed to this Virgin were miraculously freed. On the walls of the South transept, irons, balls, and chains are suspended in ex-voto given in testimony and in thanks to the Virgin by prisoners released after having requested the intercession of Our Lady of Orcival.
