David Stoney 12:51 PM:

Manda, you mentioned that the current societal system must be “broken open” and our addiction to growth stopped.  I quite agree, but it is hard for me to imagine the predatory capitalists voluntarily surrendering their wealth and power.  I wonder if the heart of the earth (Gaia) is allowing (directing?) us to disrupt the ecosystem to the extent that there will be a system crash from which more sustainable remnants can arise and flourish?

BOUDICA: DREAMING THE EAGLE

"NEVER CHANGE THINGS BY FIGHTING THE EXISTING REALITY. TO CHANGE SOMETHING, BUILD A NEW MODEL THAT MAKES THE EXISTING MODEL OBSOLETE." - BUCKMINSTER FULLER

"It would be best to consider this as a revolution, not of guns, but of consciousness, which will be won by seizing the key images, myths, archetypes, eschatologies, and ecstasies

so that life won't seem worth living unless one is on the transforming energy's side. " -- Gary Snyder - essay Four Changes - 1970

"When future generations look back upon the Great Derangement, they will certainly blame the leaders and politicians of this time for their failure to address the climate crisis. But they may well hold artists and writers to be equally culpable - for the imagining of possibilities is not, after all, the job of politicians and bureaucrats." -- Amitav Ghosh - The Great Derangement

"It is easier to imagine the total extinction of all life on earth than it is to imagine an end to capitalism." -- Mark Fisher - Capital Realism (paraphrased)

"The concept of Thrutopia says, 'Don't defer your dreams. We need those dreams now."' -- Rupert Read - Thrutopia paper, 2017

Not Dystopias, Not Utopias - But Thrutopias... Narratives that walk us through from exactly where we are to where we need to be if the entire web of life is to flourish

THRUTOPIA:

Creating the future we'd be proud to leave behind.

Who can do this? - Everyone.

How can we do it? - However we want.

When can we do it? - All. The Time!

We are in a moment of transition

From the Anthropocene/Capitalocene

to - we hope -

the Symbiocene/Wholocene

To emerge/transform we need to bring about total systemic change.

The new system is not predictable, but we can write the stories that take us closer to the edges of our current system

This will entail total political and economic transformation.

Nothing will remain the same.

But we have to start where we are And build the stories that take us forward

This is the Thrutopian Concept...

What are the stories you tell yourself?

What could they be?

Shall we find out?

IF YOUR DREAMS DON'T SCARE YOU, THEY'RE NOT BIG ENOUGH.

"We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. But then so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change begin in art, very often our art - the art of words." -- Ursula le Guin, Acceptance speech of National Foundati•cm Medal, 2014
