Indigenous and Western ways of knowing can complement each other when we have the courage use both of our eyes, “two-eyed seeing”, in the words of Mi’kmaw Elder Albert Marshall. Ken Cohen will share a two-eyed seeing perspective on Native American/First Peoples healing traditions by exploring principles and practices and how these practices are interpreted by Western biomedicine. He will also discuss barriers to understanding created by stereotypes and misconceptions promoted by colonial “histories”, Hollywood, and New Age fantasies. And he will share his own learning journey that led him to be recognized and respected as an indigenous healing practitioner.
Ken Cohen, M.A. is a traditional healer and indigenous health and culture educator. He was mentored, tested, and strictly trained since his youth by noted medicine men and women and maintains close ties with his adoptive Nehiyaw (Cree) family. Ken is passionate about the dialogue between ancient wisdom and modern science. His presentations have been hosted by the Iskotew and Kumik Elders Lodges (Elder in Residence), Health Canada, and numerous medical schools.
