Jennifer Browdy and Spring Cheng

When we write memoir with the intention of honoring the feminine principle, we organize and weave our past experience to prepare a “womb” to receive the seeds of the future that want to be born through our present being. The seeds of the future do not come from planning or strategizing, the kind of mental activities centered around cerebral processing. Instead, they are rooted in a deep nurturing instinct, a yin-receptivity and listening, and embodied and intuitive intelligence that is always pregnant with the future.

Spring Cheng, together with memoirist and memoir coach Jennifer Browdy, will share how this future-oriented art of memoir-writing expands personal narrative to include the planetary and transpersonal, balancing the deep presence of the feminine with the active principles of the masculine. Jennifer will discuss her purposeful approach to weaving together individual, societal and planetary life threads into a single rich textual tapestry, and Spring will share how memoir-writing can serve as preparation for studying the I Ching oracle and the art of cultivating resonance between the inner and outer.

This session is an introduction to the upcoming class “Life as Oracle (1): Weaving a Personal-Planetary Life Narrative,” which will begin in January 2025.

Dr. Jennifer Browdy, a professor of literature, writing and media arts at Bard College/Simon’s Rock and the global Bard Open Society University Network, coined the term “purposeful memoir” to describe essential contemplative work for leaders and activists. The publisher of Green Fire Press, she is an author coach and co-host of the online writers’ community Birth Your Truest Story. Her award-winning books include: Purposeful Memoir as a Quest for a Thriving Future, The Elemental Journey of Purposeful Memoir, and the memoir What I Forgot …And Why I Remembered. She publishes two Substack newsletters, Writing to Right the World & The Spirit of Education and leads an annual memoir retreat in Tuscany as well as Riding & Writing trips to Portugal and Iceland. She is passionate about empowering people to birth a culture that celebrates inter-connectedness, harmony, and beauty. Spring spent the first half of her life in traditional, pre-industrialized China and the latter half in the US. She received a doctoral degree in molecular biology and masters in acupuncture. She founded the Living Resonance Leadership MA/PhD program. Spring connects with the native Spirit of China through ancient poetry, singing and qigong Tai Chi. In 2023, ten of her songs composed over ancient Chinese poetry were featured in documentary movie Dancing with the Dead. Spring is the author of Resonance Code – Empowering Leaders to Evolve Toward Wholeness. Her current writings can be found at here.
