The Israeli - Hamas War in Gaza: A Perspective of an American Jew

Today we will examine some of the complexities not carried in the news media about what is happening in Gaza as Israel begins its military retaliation against the Hamas attack against Israel on Oct 7. What is unfolding is an unspeakable humanitarian catastrophe. We will speak with Dov Korff-Korn, an American born Jew of Holocaust survivors who has lived in Israel and carries many of the perspectives and contradictions of the current situation. This session is part of an ongoing examination of what is occurring in the Middle East.

Speaker:

Dov Korff-Korn

Dov grew up in a religious Zionist Jewish community in New York City. The grandson of pogrom survivors and descendant of Jews fleeing European-Christian persecution, Dov is acutely aware of the evils of antisemitism and the critical need for honesty around that history. Also at a young age, Dov identified problems with the one-sided Zionist narrative surrounding him. In response, he spent years studying the roots of Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including producing a culminating college thesis on the sociopolitical impacts of Zionism and Israeli nationalism on modern Jewish identity. Over several years, he worked closely on-the-ground with Palestinian and Israeli NGOs and activists seeking to build peace and understanding. While Dov has taken a step back from local work in Israel-Palestine, his studies and first-hand experiences there prepared him for his current advocacy for Indigenous sovereignty and environmental justice.
