Our attention is valuable, not only because it is in high demand, but because it is powerful. When we focus on something it comes into the foreground and most else recedes. Our attention is the most valuable thing we have to offer to ourselves and to others. Companies know this. Our attention has become the new raw resource and it is being extracted from us just like fossil fuels are being extracted from the earth for the carbon economy. If we are not conscious about how we pay attention, we may be squandering our most valuable asset – the moments and experiences of our life itself.

Why is ‘Attention Literacy’ so important?  How do the decisions we make as individuals online, shopping, searching and on social media impact healthy societies, climate change and our individual moment to moment quality of life?  What can we do to change how we apply our attention to have a more positive impact on the world we live in? Understanding the power of attention is important for creating a world that supports thriving of all life, rather than allowing our attention to be manipulated, exploited and monetized for the benefit of 3rd parties in service of a market economy.

A conscious attention economy is defined by respect and reciprocity, where all stakeholders benefit and business models are generative rather than extractive, meaning that, as business is accomplished more effectively, value continuously increases for all stakeholders – business, governments, society, nature and individuals alike.
