Evolutionary biologists tell us that human beings are not built to function as autonomous individual units but in functional, tight-knit groups. Yet in our atomized age, how do we even meaningfully define community and where can we find it? Most men are socialized to “go it alone” and find few if any functional communities to draw sustenance from, arguably least of all their workplaces. Frederick Marx will discuss where men can find functional, supportive communities and how to build them ourselves when needed, through the practice of council. We’ll discuss the importance of people identifying with each other and being invested in each other’s well-being. We’ll discuss why grieving must be understood as an essential community practice, and why it’s necessary to have people in our lives capable of “singing our life song back to us.”
