Technologies of Hope III: Building Materials, Biocyler & Intellisynthesis

In the mid-1700’s In England, Europe and the United States witnessed the start of the Industrial Revolution that was to last in four distinct cycles until the mid-20th Century. During this period, many of the inventions introduced made work easier and faster, leading to production and manufacturing becoming a dominant focus and also contributing to a massive migration from farms to cities. Together these two elements dramatically and quickly changed the world in many ways.

However, as we have learned over the last 70 years, much of the widespread optimism that technology and innovation would eventually solve all of our problems has not been proven true. Technology has not eliminated poverty, disease, violence and many other significant challenges. Indeed, technology and innovation have actually created other serious problems.

For this reason, in our Technologies of Hope series we are turning our attention to a different kind of of technologist and innovator whose imaginations, skills and talents can mitigate some of the damage we, in our quest for power, profit and control, have created and still important advances to society in our quest to ensure our survival and that of our habitat

Series Co-Hosts: George Cappannelli, CEO, Age Nation, Tom Eddington, CEO, Endangered Global, Russel Donda, serial entrepreneur

Chris Maurer Architect, innovator and founder of redhouse studio, has worked in North America, Europe, and Africa and led projects for such clients as the Clinton Global initiative, The UN Millennium Project, Madonna’s Raising Malawi, and NASA’s NIAC program. Redhouse is working with MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms and the Standard Bank Group to develop building materials and processes in Namibia from biomass waste that can create food, save water, and sequester carbon. Redhouse is also using living organisms to remediate and recycle waste construction and demolition materials with their biocycler technology. With renowned astrobiologist, Dr Lynn Rothschild at NASA Ames Research Center, redhouse is designing self-growing habitats for off-planet missions. Chris has also written open-source building technology manuals on earth construction and bioterial production for the AIA, Center for Architecture Foundation, and for Elsevier

Michael Sussman began his career in transportation in 1994 by launching Strategic Rail Finance, advising government and businesses on strategies to improve capital investment in freight infrastructure and industrial systems. His commonsense message, based in whole-systems thinking, resonates across political and geographic spectrums. In 2007, Michael founded OnTrackNorthAmerica, an NGO dedicated to sustainable supply chain planning. OnTrackNorthAmerica is currently advancing the North American Freight Forum, a breakthrough institutional model for public and private sector stakeholders to co-create plans, policies, and investments that serve the common good. Over the past nine months, OTNA has recently convened hundreds of stakeholders in New Mexico to co-create the National Sustainable Forestry Business Plan, a forest-to-market strategy for harvesting, logistics, and processing that enhances regional collaboration and local economic development. Michael will discuss IntelliSynthesis, the convening methodology that enables a higher level of collective intelligence for breakthrough results.
