One of the reasons for the global incapacity to solve any of our global challenges is because virtually in every country on earth the educational system from kindergarten through university is completely dysfunctional. Students are taught rote memorization of fact and seldom any lessons in moral development. The Western scientific reductionist mindset has taken over the training of our young. Head knowledge has replaced heart knowing. There are a few notable exceptions such as Waldorf or Montessori schooling and a number of green oriented schools but these are marginal and generally only available to the affluent. Today we will hear from two educators who believe that the key to the future of education is to return to indigenous forms of learning.
- Ilarion ‘Kuuyux’ Merculieff is a member of the Aleut Nation in Alaska. He is Founder of the Global Center for Indigenous Leadership and Lifeways http://www.GCILL.world/. He is also the co-founder and ongoing key speaker for the http://www.wisdomweavers.world/. He has over 50 years of experience serving his people, the Unangan (Aleut people) of the Pribilof Islands of Alaska and Indigenous peoples around the world in a number of leadership capacities. Raised in a traditional Unangan (Aleut) way and received his traditional name “Kuuyux” at age 4 by the last Kuuyux left alive. The name is given to one person in each lifetime amongst his people. Kuuyux a carrier of ancient knowledge into modern times, a messenger.
- Jinan K B is an Indian educator who has spent decades seeking to transform the educational system in India in his home province of Kerala. He spent many years living with illiterate tribal communities and discovered that being illiterate actually allows for a holistic embodied form of learning. Literacy pushes people into their heads. After years of experimentation and reflection, he has concluded that only a return to an indigenous form of learning will suffice to enable India’s children to grow and prosper.
- Alon Liel -- Update on Crisis of Democracy in Israel -- Ambassador Alon Liel received his PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1986 when he completed his doctoral dissertation, “The dependence of imported energy and its impact on the foreign policy of turkey.” Since then, Liel has served as a chargé d’affaires in Turkey and as Israel’s ambassador to South Africa. Following his role in 1999 as foreign affairs adviser to then-chairman of the Labor party Ehud Barak, Liel became director-general of the Foreign Ministry in 2000. Today he lectures at Tel Aviv University, Hebrew University and the Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya.
