In a world of escalating turbulence, how should we act to ensure both internal calm and external effectiveness? The Tao Te Ching from ancient China may provide a wise and timely guide.
- William Martin is a Taoist author, teacher, and counselor. He is the author of a number of popular books that present Taoist thought for modern audiences. His books include, The Sage's Tao Te Ching, The Parent's Tao Te Ching, The Activist's Tao Te Ching, and The Tao of Forgiveness. He teaches at conferences and webinars and has a consulting practice which specializes in one-on-one work with people during personal spiritual and psychological transitions. He can be reached at williammartin.org. William describes his own biographical journey as a "winding path. I have played many roles: Engineer, Pastor, Counselor, and Author. I have explored beliefs and ways of living that include Zen Buddhism, Christianity, and Taoism. I have been nurtured by the teachings and lives of Alan Watts, Chungliang Al Huang, Thomas Merton, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Ed Abbey. I have lived in cities and towns and in the countryside. I have run marathons and hiked in deserts and mountains. I have found great beauty and peace in the practice of Tai Chi and Qigong. My activism dates from my years at the University of California at Berkeley during the mid 1960s. My quietism comes from more than 40 years of studying, teaching, writing about, and pondering the Tao Te Ching and other Taoist writings. Today I live with my wife, Nancy, in the magnificent Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona and work with individuals who are living through the transitions life offers."
