Dr. Jeffrey Dunne examines the limitations of language as a means of bringing disparate people together. What are the fundamental drivers that cause us to misunderstand one another, especially in situations where we are easily convinced that our understanding is solid?  And perhaps more importantly, how can those limitations be overcome?

There is perhaps no better reflection of the complexity and sophistication of human consciousness than the languages we use to communicate. Ironically, this same tool by which we express and share complex ideas and feelings also bears the potential to forge not merely confusion but tremendous rifts in humanity. As humans, we quickly forget that words are metaphors whose interpretations depend strongly on the life experiences of the listener, experiences that are almost never the same as those of the communicator. It is no wonder that miscommunication and misunderstanding have caused levels of pain, anger, and destruction that are at least as great as from instigators like greed and ideology.

In this talk, Dr. Dunne examines the limitations of language as a means of bringing disparate people together: what are the fundamental drivers that cause us to misunderstand one another, especially in situations where we are easily convinced that our understanding is solid?  And perhaps more importantly, how can those limitations be overcome?

  • Jeffrey Dunne is, first and foremost, a generalist whose primary motivator is to maximize a holistic worldview. In complement to a natural inclination towards philosophy, mysticism, energetics, and social sciences, he received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and later his masters and Ph.D. in Experimental Physics from Purdue University.  He taught for several years at the undergraduate level before transitioning to a research position at the Johns Hopkins University.  He is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the International Consciousness Research Laboratories.  Jeff is also a composer and an award-winning author and playwright, who has written several books and short stories.  His credits include over 150 scripts for stage and film, about two-thirds of which have won awards and been produced across North America, Europe, and Asia.  In all of this, he has discovered that the most important unifying theme across his life (and he believes across everyone's lives) is the role of communication, and that the ability to establish a solid foundation for individuals to understand one another is the first step in overcoming the myriad of challenges that stand in the way humanity rising above its current predicaments.
