What do the war in Ukraine, fundamentalist religions, multi-level marketing, domestic violence, the Jonestown cult, purity culture, and sex trafficking have in common?! The dynamics of any relationship, whether between two individuals or a leader and their country, where one seeks to have power over another, includes the use of coercive control techniques. In this course you will become familiar with significance of coercive control in many facets of daily and global life, the 31 identified techniques and related terminology, and begin to understand how they are being used in three main areas: politics, intimate partner violence and religion. The class will cover models of identification as well as understanding healthy group vs unhealthy group dynamics and when humans are most susceptible to undue influence and coercive tactics.
Shawna Peters grew up in a high demand, high control Protestant religious group which her family had been members of for 500 years. After multiple mental and autoimmune health diagnoses in her early 20’s and a near death experience, she began to listen to her health symptoms and recognized the symptoms were related to her childhood and early adult years in the insular, authoritarian religious community. The journey to recovery lead Shawna out of her religious community and eventually her country and family of origin. With her M.S. in counselling psychology and trainings in numerous natural health models, she enjoyed co-faciliating a natural health clinic for Costa Ricans living in poverty which lead her into a deep understanding of trauma. Shawna started her PhD at Ubiquity University in 2019 as an extension of her healing as she focuses on the effects of coercive control on women in evangelical and fundamentalist Protestant religious groups.
