In relation to climate change, the current options open to us are narrower and more limited they have ever been. Currently, we are faced with choices determined more by chaos than control. In his “Deep Adaptation: A Map for Navigating Climate Tragedy” (2018), Jem Bendell calls us into a more responsible and sober territory: acceptance and adaptation. Facing what increasingly seems like societal collapse and an uninhabitable earth, humanity must prepare to adapt to colossal challenge and change. We can do that best by accepting reality and relying upon our collective wisdom and those virtues and skills that have allowed us in the past not only to survive but to endure and, hopefully, prevail.

Project Adapt believes each of us individually and all of us collectively are in charge of whatever future lies before us. We all have essential roles to play in the liberation of our minds, the openness of our hearts and the unification of our spirits toward a future that will require us to embrace change, weather despair, and act with love--without the guarantee of success.

Project Adapt embodies the practice of the 4 Rs of Deep Adaptation: Resilience, Relinquishment, Restoration and Reconciliation, plus one more, Reverence. This session features voices from the Project Adapt team and others committed to the principle of adaptation.

Participants

  • Rev Lauren Van Ham, an interfaith chaplain specializing in Eco-Chaplaincy, serves in healthcare, corporate, and academic settings. Her consulting work  ranges from faith communities to individuals to multi-national corporations.

His life-long commitment to public service is driven by a passion for the American experiment in self-government.

He is the co-founder of the Bountiful Children’s Foundation, which addresses childhood malnutrition in the developing world.
