Our traditional educational institutions no longer support the life of constant wonder and doubt. Crippling students with debt, faculties frame the ‘college experience’ as preparation for the modern labor market. Regarded as useless and counterproductive, the hopeful romantics inspired by philosophy, poetry, art, music, and the beauty of the human imagination, appear to be out-of-touch with the so-called values of the ‘real world’ and its idolization of capital and technological production. Assuredly, the idea that Big Tech might create platforms supportive of creative ingenuity and critical thought is a utopian daydream. Yet, as Nietzsche once said, enemies must become our friends if we are to surmount the growing relativism and nihilism spreading like wildfire in our culture.

As the first open source, multimedia platform designed to help users think and create philosophical material be it prose, music, film, etc, the Khora platform under development by today's speaker, challenges users to first understand themselves and the world around them while also challenging users to entertain opposing points of view. do more than consume and ‘like’ individuals can forge connections between content, while contributing to the infinite expansion of wisdom that highlights the diversity of ways each of us live and think philosophically as philosophy is not an academic discipline. Rather, it is an initiation into the romantic world where once again all things are made possible. For a myriad of reasons, our culture has lost sight of this fact, preferring instead the vacuous world of the online space, with all its trivial information and fractured attention spans. We believe that the internet, and the way it has connected the world over, is not doomed to monotony and triviality, but can be harnessed and channeled into something constructive and challenging. Khora has been designed with this specific goal in mind, to deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us, and to reanimate a sincere and consistent interest in living the philosophical life.

Danielle A. Layne, Professor of Philosophy at Gonzaga University, has published widely on Plato and the Platonic tradition, including the recent “Divine Names and the Mystery of Diotima” in the Routledge Companion to Women in Ancient Philosophy (2024). Founder of Palinode Productions, a Deep Learning Philosophy Platform (June 2024 release), Layne eagerly embraces novel approaches to the study of antiquity that reanimate and vivify the uniqueness of the Platonic tradition.
