Edwin Rutsch, the creator of Empathy Circles, has been bringing his work into the arena healing political divides. Last year he ran for Congress in CA on an empathy platform. The Empathy Circle format he has created can be seen as a “gateway or first step practice; the ‘next steps’ of this foundational practice could be counseling, mediation, NVC practices, Focusing, Human-Centered Design, Dynamic Facilitation, etc.”

An Empathy Circle is a structured dialogue process based on mutual active listening. The process increases constructive dialogue and mutual understanding by ensuring that each person feels fully heard to their satisfaction.
Empathy Café: 10 to 20+ participants. After an initial introduction, we divide into Empathy Circles of 4 to 5 participants, each with a facilitator.
In some empathy circles we typically have two participants from the political left and two from the right and a facilitator and co-facilitator.
