Guantanamo is an American disgrace. It ranks with the internment of Japanese Americans in prison camps during WWII as the two most egregious examples of America abandoning its Constitution because of national panic during wartime. After the Supreme Court held that Guantanamo prisoners were entitled to habeas corpus, lawyers rallied to bring constitutional law to the island. Over 16 years, attorney Brent Rushforth represented six Guantanamo prisoners, freeing them all and returning them to their homes in the Middle East. This session gives an in-depth account of this dark chapter in recent American history and what we might learn from it.
Brent Rushforth graduated from Stanford University and the law school at the University of California at Berkeley. He is the co-founder of the Center for Law in the Public Interest where he tried cases preventing oil drilling off Santa Monica’s beaches and the construction of a massive coal fired plant in the middle of Zions, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef and the Grand Canyon National Parks. He has argued successfully before the United States Supreme Court.
