This presentation will use the abduction story of Betty and Barney Hill to illustrate the variety of ways Americans have understood the UFO phenomenon, and what UFOs can tell us about how our society imagines concepts like religion, science, and authority. Betty and Barney Hill were the first Americans to describe what has become known as "alien abduction." Late in the night of September 19, 1961, they saw a strange light in the sky following them down New Hampshire's Highway 3. Months later, under the influence of hypnosis, they recalled the light landing on the road in front of them, and being taken by small creatures onto the craft, where they were subjected to medical experimentation. Over the years that followed, the Hills drifted away from the mainstream of American life and toward the New Age movement.
Matthew Bowman is an associate professor of history and religion and the Hunter Chair of Mormon Studies at Claremont Graduate University and the author of several books, including Christian: The Politics of a Word in America and The Abduction of Betty and Barney Hill: Alien Encounters, Civil Rights, and the New Age in America
Robert Rees, Ph.D. is Visiting Professor and Director of Mormon Studies at Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. He has taught at UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, and Vytautas Magnus University in Lithuania where he was a Fulbright Professor of American Studies (1995-96). A poet and scholar, Rees has published widely on religion as well as on politics, culture, literature, education, and the arts. He has long been involved in interfaith work, including in relation to climate issues. He is the co-founder and current Vice-President of the Bountiful children’s Foundation, a humanitarian organization that addresses children’s malnutrition in the developing world.
