The concept of 'the anomalous' elicits a wide variety of reactions, from excitement to skepticism or even outright fear. Yet, what is an anomaly? In this presentation, we will explore the nature of the anomalous, what puts something in that auspicious category, and what anomalies truly represent - for us as individuals, for science, and for society in general.
Jeffrey Dunne received his Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics in 1998 from Purdue University, and spent several years teaching engineering and physics at the undergraduate level. He joined the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in 2003 as a researcher focused on acoustics, but quickly broadened his research pursuits to include modeling and simulation, signal processing, biometrics and identity management, cyber security, sensing technologies, augmented and virtual reality, and several other fields. The majority of his “at work” time since 2010, however, has concentrated on data science, with a specific focus on information representation and semantic reasoning. Outside of work, Jeff pursues a different, but equally diverse, set of intellectual pursuits in the study of consciousness and cognition, energetics, philosophy, linguistics, and communications. He is an award-winning playwright, an enthusiastically mediocre stage actor, an intermittent author of fantasy and science fiction, and serves on the editorial boards of multiple journals. In 2017 Jeff became Chairman of the Board of the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL), where his primary activities are directed towards an integrated approach to applying an understanding of consciousness to unify art, science, health, and education.
