Today we are beginning a several month program on the theme of Apology — apologies we need to receive, apologies we need to give, apologies to our bodies, apologies to the Earth, all within the framework of reconciliation, reparation, forgiveness and healing. Apology is the gateway. We will mobilize toward a global Day of Apology May 26 to coincide with the National Sorry Day in Australia demanded by the indigenous peoples there for what the Australians did to them and especially in abducting their children.

V’s bestselling book The Apology opened this issue up for many people when it was published in 2019. Her new book Reckoning is coming out this month and is a call for a global acknowledgement of all the suffering we cause each other and the larger ecology. We want to build on this and bring in as many contributing organizations, coalitions and concerned people as we can. We believe this has enormous potential to open up a conversation globally that has really never been convened before at scale.

We begin the process with indigenous women elders providing blessings, narratives of the prophecies of our time and stories of what their people have endured during the years of colonization. We will then hear from V on Jan 16 on her perspective on the importance and nature of deep apology and then invite women from her networks who have suffered from patriarchy, people of color who have suffered racism, indigenous peoples who have been victimized by colonialism, gender fluid people, etc., all to simply tell their stories. We will also invite people to apologize — men to women, colonizers to colonized, whites to blacks, etc.

The point is not to judge or condemn or condone. It is to simply provide a space on our global broadcast to let people tell their stories to a global audience in the knowledge that stories are very powerful instruments of inspiration, compassion and transformation. Toward May 26, we will orient the process toward a collective apology to the Earth.

The format will like a double helix: we will interweave story telling with dialogues on various themes related to apology, reparations, Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, forgiveness and healing. Our orientation will be very Socratic in the sense that we will be asking deep questions about apology, forgiveness and reconciliation. What does apology mean in the face of mass criminality? Are there acts that are unforgivable?  Can someone apologize on behalf of someone else? Is forgiveness complete without apology? What does atonement really mean? Repentance? What do the different spiritual traditions emphasize in these domains? What is the wisdom of indigenous peoples?

It is our intention that out of this interweaving of stories with deep inquiry we will be able to elevate consciousness and open space for the kind of shift in consciousness so desperately needed in our time.
