Today we dialogue with Fr. Joshtrum Kureethadam and Martin Palmer who were integral to the formation and writing of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si which calls for greater ecological awareness and action among the faithful.
Our work is primarily guided by the vision that Pope Francis set out in the two social encyclicals: Laudato Si’, on the care for our common home, and Fratelli Tutti, on human fraternity. The Ecology and Creation Sector, which I lead, is responsible for implementing the vision of integral ecology that Pope Francis lays out in Laudato Si’, listening and responding to the Cry of the Earth and the Cry of the Poor, which can never be separated from each other for true and authentic ecological action. Of course, this is also related to the message from Fratelli Tutti, as we all need to come together as one human family to take bold and immediate action on behalf of our common home. Ecology, after all, is about relationships: with God, with the Earth and the whole of Creation, with our fellow human beings, and with ourselves.
Right now, our priority is the Laudato Si’ Action Platform (LSAP). It was launched in November 14th, 2021, the World Day of the Poor (which also happened to be the last day of COP26), when Pope Francis officially opened the registrations and invited everyone, from individuals and families to universities, businesses, and organizations, to join this seven-year journey towards integral ecology. The science is clear; time is running short, and we must move to concrete environmental and climate action immediately. If our political leaders are not up to this task, we must start from below, so our goal with the LSAP is to reach a critical mass of people necessary for systemic ecological transformation.
- Rev. Dr. Joshtrom Isaac Kureethadam is coordinator of Ecology and Creation at the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. He is also chair of Philosophy of Science and director of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome. His most recent books include The Ten Green Commandments of Laudato Si’ (2019), The Philosophical Roots of the Ecological Crisis (2017), and Creation in Crisis: Science, Ethics and Theology (2014).
- Martin Palmer, founder with HRH Prince Philip of the Alliance for Religion and Conservation and founder of FaithInvest. Martin has dedicated his life to increasing ecological awareness and action among the great religions. He is the author of many books on Chinese history and literature and religion and ecology.
