In 2014, Terry and Jude observed that humpback whales were returning to the Salish Sea to feed and frolic after shunning the waters where their ancestors had been slaughtered over 100 years ago. They set out in their old 27ft C & C sailboat to hang out with the whales and learn more about them, their families, communication and relationships. Through presentations of video and sound recordings they share what they learn with the local community and beyond.

Every whale, like every other individual, has their own personality, preferences and purposes. People love these awesome beings who thrill and delight us with their huge size and amazing acrobatic feats. But who are they really, and what can they tell us about their lives and the state of the oceans today? This presentation is a perspective from the fringes of science and interspecies communication, featuring compelling video and sound of humpback whales being themselves.

Jude Abrams spent decades playing music in jazz, folk, salsa, Brazilian and other bands. However, as she experienced the ongoing destruction of forests and fish streams on the pacific coast of "British Columbia" Jude was inspired to record sounds of the forests, rivers and then the ocean. Documenting environmental sounds of a place gathers information for contributing to the ongoing political efforts of First Nations to save their old growth forests and salmon streams and adds to our knowledge about the health of the sea. It also makes for compelling audio. Jude can spend hours listening to the ocean come alive through her hydrophones. She plays a "didjeridoo" (actually a 4ft/1.2m PVC pipe) for the whales. Some of them even get curious.

Terry L. Brown has been a lover of water and aquatic wonders since minnows nibbled his toes as a toddler, and he explored lakes and rivers with mask and flippers during his childhood. Later on he sealed his cameras in waterproof housings and metamorphosed into "The Amphibiographer", exploring life at the interface of water, earth, and air. He brings storytelling, writing, public speaking, and mentoring skills, along with a playful sense of humour, to the mix. Stir in sailing and kayaking experience and he was all set to welcome humpback whales back to the Salish Sea and record their lives! Terry has also been an environmental activist since the mid-80's working on issues ranging from water use, salmon, herring, and forest protection; including a very public role in Clayoquot Summer '93 where he was arrested for protecting 1000 year old coastal forests.
