2023 is the hottest year on Earth in 120,000 years and global temperatures are at their highest level in 3-5 million years. Climate change is now so out of control that UN Secretary General Guterres declared at the 2023 General Assembly of the UN that “humanity has opened the gates of hell.” In the midst of this, the 28th Conference of Parties, which brings governments, corporations and NGOs together to discuss how the governments can deal with climate change, is taking place right now in Dubai. The conference is chaired by Sultan al-Jaber, CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co, who is seeking to bring the oil industry into prominence in a conference supposedly committed to eliminating fossil fuels. This contradiction explains much of the dysfunction of our governments in the face of possible human extinction due to runaway climate disaster.
