A wave of scholarship known collectively as “The Jesus Seminar” has looked at what they call “the Jesus of History” as opposed to “the Christ of faith.”  In so doing they have rediscovered (for the sixth time, according to Geoffrey Nuttall) that Jesus was nonviolent(!).  One very accessible author in this diverse group is Keith Akers, ''The Lost Religion of Jesus: Simple Living and Nonviolence in Early Christianity. '' Another would be Marcus Borg, ''Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time''.  Akers shows that Jesus' preaching was first and foremost about simple living, pacifism, and vegetarianism, and that he had never intended to create a new religion. 

Religion scholar John Dominic Crossan has shown perhaps most convincingly that Jesus was nonviolent, in spirit and in his legacy.  Challenging as it is, the idea refused to die.  Today we are heirs not only to this historical lineage but of course, and perhaps especially, the more consistent and better documented tradition of India that climaxed in our own time with Gandhi.  Nor is there any reason to believe we’ve reached its end!

In the 1980s he was a founder and national coordinator of the Pledge of Resistance, which for nearly a decade mobilized nonviolent action for peace in Central America. Since 1990 Butigan has worked with Pace e Bene Nonviolence Service, which has trained tens of thousands of people in the power of nonviolent change. He serves on the Executive Committee of Pax Christi International’s Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, which has co-sponsored two landmark conferences on nonviolence at the Vatican.

It compares the 20th century nonviolent movements of Martin Luther King, Jr and Abdul Ghaffar Khan.
