Who are we; and what is our relationship to others?  Where is our unity to be found?  The old formula of “body, mind, and spirit” is perfectly valid.  It needs to be taken whole, ''and'' it’s essential to recognize that they are an ascending hierarchy, that the higher order of being must prevail over the lower.  In fact, that the lower is a creation, or projection of the higher.  This is as optimistic as it is evolutionary. 

* '''[[Michael Nagler]]''' is Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature, emeritus, at the University of California, Berkeley and teaches in the Peace and Conflict Studies Program he founded on that campus in the 1970’s.
