Nonviolence has a long legacy; even if we only created a word for it in the last 100 years.

A wave of scholarship known collectively as “The Jesus Seminar” has looked at what they call “the Jesus of History” as opposed to “the Christ of faith.”  In so doing they have rediscovered (for the sixth time, according to Geoffrey Nuttall) that Jesus was nonviolent(!).  One very accessible author in this diverse group is Keith Akers, The Lost Religion of Jesus: Simple Living and Nonviolence in Early Christianity.  Another would be Marcus Borg, Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time. Akers shows that Jesus' preaching was first and foremost about simple living, pacifism, and vegetarianism, and that he had never intended to create a new religion.

Religion scholar John Dominic Crossan has shown perhaps most convincingly that Jesus was nonviolent, in spirit and in his legacy.  Challenging as it is, the idea refused to die.  Today we are heirs not only to this historical lineage but of course, and perhaps especially, the more consistent and better documented tradition of India that climaxed in our own time with Gandhi.  Nor is there any reason to believe we’ve reached its end!
