This session presents a perspective of the concept of free-will and creativity that involves a reference to the entirety of existence, based on the thinking of physicist David Bohm.
The intent of this session is to present a personal understanding and perspective, in order to offer possible insight and hopefully fuel ongoing discussions, here and elsewhere. Drawing from considerations of computing and artificial intelligence, the ending point is a concept of free-will and creativity that involves a reference to the entirety of existence. Explanation calls on quantum physicist David Bohm’s concepts, drawn mainly from his book Wholeness and the Implicate Order. He offers a non-dualistic oneness to the entirety of existence. This is somewhat integrated with psychologist Carl Rogers’ concept of the person. Rogers proposed that we each have an internal “locus of evaluation”, which he defined in his 1959 paper as being “the source of evidence as to values.” This integration is considered as the root of free-will and creativity, in being able to reference the wholeness Bohm offered in his implicate order, and so find certainty, and thus decision and creativity.
Presenters
- Mark Harrison entered the realm of Humanistic Psychology after a career in computing for large-scale manufacturing (aerospace and power generation). Initially qualifying as a Person-Centered Counsellor in 2005, he completed a Masters degree a few years later. Ten years working in a Hospice meant witnessing a vast range of life experience. He now continues working in a quiet private practice. Alongside client-work, he has been active in associated organisations, attended many Person-Centered events orientated towards personal and theoretical development, and engaged in many online theoretical discussions. These have extended beyond therapy, considering how Person-Centred theory extends into the realms of group work and conflict reduction.
- Steve Cox became interested in people’s psychological health as a result of his own experiences of the UK mental health system. In his late teens he experienced high doses of first generation neuroleptic drugs and electroconvulsive therapy. Realising that his distress had been compounded by pathology and psychiatric treatment he sought healthy alternative help. Person-centred therapy facilitated his journey towards health and growth. Subsequently, Steve has been a person-centred psychotherapist for past 28 years. He has a deep interest in all things connected to people’s development. His practise and academic attention is focused upon the interconnection between ‘me’, ‘you’, ‘us’ and ‘world’.
