Men need other men – as friends, colleagues, and brothers.  In many tribal cultures, there were special places where men gathered together, apart from women.  Men need “men time,” in the same way that women need “women time.”  The women’s liberation movement brought women together into groups to awaken and develop each other’s power, rights, and freedom.  Seeing this empowerment, men followed suit with men’s groups, which provide a structure for holding a man in his inner process, and provides an opportunity for deep self-examination, problem solving, feeling emotions, mutual support and self-development.  Organizations such as ManKind Project, Tribe of Men, MDI, and Evryman have made it possible for hundreds of thousands of men to expand their awareness and become better, more compassionate and virtuous men.

Convener:

Panelists

  • Owen Marcus Author of Grow Up: A Man’s Guide to Masculine Emotional Intelligence and cofounder of Evryman, an international community of men’s groups. Owen was trained as a Rolfer, and has led corporate management and stress reduction seminars. He has worked with men’s groups for more than 20 years, giving men the tools and skills to be successful, create successful relationships, liberate their strengths, and live their lives fully and with joy.
  • David Kaar As a physicist and material scientist, David developed methods for depositing thin metal layers on polymer tubes for medical applications. He joined The ManKind Project shortly after its founding, and held almost every position in the organization, from Trainer to Chairman (twice).  He is the creator of The Dragon Training, which brings together wisdom and experiences from Zen, the Integral perspective, and Shadow Work. He has led more than 200 trainings, and has supported thousands of men and women to dive deeply into their shadow in order to become more compassionate and authentic humans. Having survived a near-fatal accident in 2011, he brings skill, compassion, gratitude and humor to everything he does, and to everywhere he goes.
  • Michael Taylor is the author of A New Conversation with Men, Shattering Black Male Stereotypes, Lessons from a Gathering of Men, Black Men Rock, and many other books. He is a coach, speaker, entrepreneur, and radio and TV host. He leads corporate trainings in diversity and inclusion.  Born in the inner-city projects of Corpus Christi, Texas to a single mother of six children, Michael has used his life experiences to support people in achieving happiness and satisfaction in their careers, businesses, and personal lives.  He is currently focused on empowering youth to reach their full potential through the Too Cool Club, an educational company that provides life skills and entrepreneurial training to young people.
  • Keith Merron, PhD – Founder and Managing Partner of Leadership Pathways, an organizational consulting and leadership development firm dedicated to helping organizations with bold visions achieve sustainable high performance and industry leadership. He is an executive development consultant with 37 years’ experience assisting executives and managers in business, government, and education. He has successfully conducted over twenty-five large-system strategic, cultural, and technical change efforts resulting in a measurable increase in organizational productivity, employee performance, and employee satisfaction. Keith is a cofounder of The Tribe of Men, an initiatory men’s community in the Bay Area, and has been involved in men’s work for more than 30 years. Keith has designed and led over 100 seminars and workshops for leaders, including a program for men, The Sword and Scepter.
  • Jerome Teelucksingh, PhD – Lecturer in History at the University of the West Indies, Jerome cofounded International Men’s Day in 1999, which began in his home country of Trinidad and Tobago. It quickly spread internationally to more than 70 countries. It is now a movement which promotes goodwill for all people, and especially celebrates fathers in their important role in the family. IMD’s goals are to promote positive male role models (including working class men who live decent, honest lives), celebrate men’s positive contributions to society (including marriage, child care and the environment), focus on men’s health and well-being, prevent discrimination against men, and create a safer and better world where everyone can grow to reach their full potential.
